Bali & Global Warming
Two things. I agree with this article. In my view, all hysteria aside, the jury is still out on whether or not global warming is even occuring, let alone caused by human activity. Rather than sending innumerable emissaries via fossil fuel burning jumbo-jets half way around the world to participate in this silliness, what I would far rather see is a concerted effort made to plan for the inevitable day when we run out of oil.
I happened upon this website when googling the term "oil by-products". I'd been searching the net for information that would give readers a grasp of the magnitude of our economic dependence on oil in areas that have nothing to do with energy, and bingo, this one came up. I have no idea if the data here is accurate, but common sense suggests that it is a reasonable portrayal of the number of oil dependent industries and, therefore jobs, that exist in the Western world. The collapse of the oil industry, either through running out of oil or global warming zealots run amok, would have catastrophic effects on the global economy on a scale at least as draconian as global warming. And there is NO debate about the fact that we will run out of oil. The only question is when.
If Western civilization, or, for that matter, humanity itself, since we are all interconnected, is to survive, we have to start thinking about far more than hypothetical anthropogenic causes of global warming. We are like the Plains Indians and oil is our buffalo. When it disappears, it will be game over.

You have hit it right on the nail there Louise. What we should be worring about is what will replace Oil as are energy use.
I'm sick of these Lefties saying the USA and Canada need to do more to stop climate change.
Thanks, Huff. I guess my main point, which didn't come through very strongly, is that the industrialized world has produced so many, many by-products from oil, which are totally unrelated to oil as energy, that an astronomically large number of jobs are doomed.
Never mind the number of things we produce such as steel and glass, the production of which requires extremely high temperatures that can only be reached with the burning of coal which is a fossil fuel, and I think you can see the colossal problem we have on our hands. Can you imagine our world without glass or steel? So really, what choice do we have? Whether it's global warming or just running out of oil, we are headed for a very bleak future.

150 years is barely a blink of the eye as far as the history of the earth (of which the atmosphere is one layer) is concerned. Any science which takes such observations from an infantisimally tiny slice of the earth's history and pretends it can observe alarming trends needs to go back to the drawing board, in my opinion, but perhaps you know more than I do. I remember the big panic about the disappearing ozone layer way back about 20 years ago. It turned out to be a crock.
What do you think will happen to the livelihoods of millions upon millions of people when oil is all used up? Does that concern you? Do you understand that even jobs that have nothing directly to do will be affected, such as those that depend on research grants and those that teach science and technology, if such a big chunk of taxable revenue disappears and unemployed, hungry half frozen people are storming the gates, so to speak? Why isn't anyone addressing that? (Or maybe they are and we aren't hearing about.)
