Latinas and White Guys

Great rant.

This teapot tempest about US Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayer is basically a big bore. About the only point that I think deserves a headline is her supposed belief that courts make policy rather than just interpret the law. Of course, I'm sure The One chose her because, among her many impressive attributes, there is an "identity politics" card that can be played here.

Hey folks. There's a Democrat in the Oval Office. He needs Latino votes. Expect him to appoint fellow Democrats with an eye on a list of politically correct Democrat criteria. The Repubs will do the same thing, except if they have any balls the criteria will have a politically incorrect flavour. Just don't pretend that Sotomayer's life has been any more challenging and therefore heroic than the lives of millions of other ordinary Americans like the dad who tells his story in the rant above.

So hats off to the ordinary White Waynes and Palefaced Patricks whose hands gets greasy and whose backs ache at the end of the day, yet who still find time to play with the kids, volunteer as a Boy Scout leader, mow the lawn and help out the neighbour whose Latino husband may be off doing a second tour in Afghanistan or dying of leukemia. You are my kind of man and you are the salt of the earth.
