It's Been a Bad Day...

..for political correctness. Two - count 'em - two victories for common sense:

The Begining of the end for political correctness: The counter-revolution has begun in Doncaster
and Free speech at long last!

I guess that vile American concept ain't so exclusive after all.

I am not sure who invented the foul PC, but frankly, I was always sure that it is them Brits who took it ad absurdum and not the Yanks.

You might not appreciate the subtleties of my use of the words "vile American concept". Here in Canada we've been dealing with an out of control quasi-judicial body known as the Canadian Human Rights Commission which has been characterized by many as a kangaroo court. They've been calling people to appear before them and punishing them for having said or written something offensive to someone else. In one such case, one of the agency's operatives dismissed the concept of freedom of expression as "an American concept that I don't give much credit to" or something along those lines.

When this kangaroo court went after a couple of highly prominent Canadians from the right side of the aisle, those two Canadians didn't take it lying down. Rather, they made the issue go viral and it became known virtually across the entire Anglosphere, if not elsewhere, that Canada had this nasty institution that punished people for having politically incorrect thoughts.

Yesterday, after a couple of years of fighting back, thanks those two men and others who stood up and made a big stink, the Canadian Human Rights Commission's founding legislation was found to be contrary to Canada's constitution. So my little snide remark about the American concept says, basically, that the American concept of freedom of expression is not so foreign to Canada after all.

Many of us are very, very pleased about this outcome. But it's not over yet. We have to get our cowardly political leadership to change the legislation so no one else has to refrain from speaking his or her mind for fear the thought police come knocking.

But maybe you knew all that.

I think the PC bit came from the sixty's generation found on both sides of the pond.

Freedom of every stripe will win out every time, it just takes time. Though Canada never fought a war for independence from France or Great Britain, the love of freedom (and profits) was one of the guiding ideals of Canadian immigration. It's very difficult to apply a one-size-fits-all model on nations spanning continents, made up of people from everywhere, and living in disperate environments and circumstances.
