Predictably, news that George W. Bush will be speaking in Saskatoon has caused all the insects to come scurrying out from under their rocks.
Yep. It's just like the good old days:
"Bush lied! People died!"
"There was no WMD."
"Millions died!"
and of course "Oil!!"
And did you know Bush summoned up the Hurricane known as Katrina! I did not know that. You learn something new every day.
Anyway, being a university town, Saskatoon has shown its leftard tendencies loud and clear. Makes me ashamed I once lived in and loved that city.

You're chastising people who are trying to bring a war criminal and monster to justice, despite an unwilling and corrupt legal system(with a few crazies thrown in for good measure, but I'm pretty sure that's not who you have the problem with).
Or do the lives of people 'over there' just not matter to you?

Actually I do care about the lives of people "over there". My ex is from Baghdad. I know several of his relatives. They are grateful that Saddam Hussein was eliminated. In fact, my ex's brother now works in the Iraqi embassy in Washington. I and they sleep much better at night now that he's gone.
God bless George Bush, Tony Blair, John Howard and all the other 27 nations who did the right thing. And shame on Canada for not being among them.

if this is any indication, I would have just turned 5, so I'm guessing probably in kindergarten learning how to read in french.
But even so, sure saddam was a monster; he was a distinctly american created monster, so if we're going to step into historical wrongs committed by dead people, I'd suggest going a step further and seeing why it was he was able to commit the atrocities he did.
And sure there are people in iraq now who are safer now than before. But the fact that you use them as an excuse for the american mass graves and other atrocities leaves me speechless.

Back it up with historical facts, please. I'm sorry my dear, but you know nothing about Iraq. You should really read up a bit on how he rose to power. Americans had nothing to do with it. You should be embarrassed by your ignorance and your total willingness to be duped.

Saddam was recruited into a plot in 1959 to assassinate Gen Qasim who had overthrown the monarchy the year before. The plot failed and Saddam fled the country.
In the late '60s, Saddam returned to take a post in the civilian govt where his organizational skills brought him acclaim. As the Iraqi president became less able to run the govt, Saddam was moved to the fore. He used his position to empower the local Ba'athist party and when ascended to national power, he signed agreements with the Baatists of neighboring countries and outlawed opposition parties, personally ordering the executions of many opponents or potential opponents.
The Baathists were anti-communist and fit neatly into the West's containment of Communism dispite the fact that Saddam signed a military pact with USSR that had Iraq's weapons come from the Soviets in 1972. The pact was discarded in 1979 when Saddam cracked down on Iraqi communists and he leaned toward the Western powers of Europe.
Under Gerald Ford, a period of detante with the Soviet Union started, but tensions remained high. The Shah of Iran was still in power providing a bulwark on the SE front against the communists. Under Saddam, and financed with oil money, Iraq was providing social services that were unprecedented among Middle Eastern countries. Saddam established and controlled the "National Campaign for the Eradication of Illiteracy" and the campaign for "Compulsory Free Education in Iraq," and largely under his auspices, the government established universal free schooling up to the highest education levels; hundreds of thousands learned to read in the years following the initiation of the program. The government also supported families of soldiers, granted free hospitalization to everyone, and gave subsidies to farmers. Iraq created one of the most modernized public-health systems in the Middle East, earning Saddam an award from UNESCO. Saddam's regime modernized and mechanized farming, improved infrastructure with road construction and electrifying much of the countryside and all major cities. Saddam's government gave women added freedoms and offered them high-level government and industry jobs. Saddam also created a Western-style legal system, making Iraq the only country in the Persian Gulf region not ruled according to traditional Sharia (Islamic law.). Saddam abolished the Sharia courts, except for personal injury claims.
The point is, during Saddam's early national leadership years, Saddm was obnoxious, but hardly viewed as any kind of threat to the West. He came to power entirely on his own initiative without being a "distinctly american (sic) made monster."
If anybody had a role in the rise of Saddam the monster, it would be the French govt leaders who suppied Saddam with weapons and nuclear technology. Dispite the fact the chemicals used in the Anfal Campaign to kill opposition tribes were American made, they were obtained through French and other European intermedieries quite illegally.
America did not overtly oppose Saddam Hussein, but neither did America actively support or aid Saddam Hussein. With the social, educational, technology, and farming improvements Saddam was making to Iraq, Saddam Hussein was deemed a better leader by American leadership than almost all other ME leaders. His barbaric side was an acceptable cost as long as he stayed within his own borders.
No matter how the story is spun or how much one hates America, Saddam Hussein was a self-made monster.
America, under George HW Bush, booted Saddam from Kuwait after an Iraqi illegal invasion. Years later, after much dithering by both Republicans and Democrats, George W Bush and 20 other nations, freed 50 million people from the grip of a madman. Too bad it had to be GW Bush and not Bill Clinton to free the Iraqi people. Few would have protested a Clinton action. But, Clinton did nothin even though he signed the law obligating the US to the removal of Saddam Hussein from power by any means necessary.

Anyway, I spent some time looking around the web for documentation. I found quite a bit, in addition to the big store of what I already had. In the end, I've come up with this as a good summary of Papa Saddam's life, beginning with his childhood, where he is suspected of committing murder after he was sent to live with his uncle.
You'll note there are about 40 or more events listed in this chronology that stops in 1991. The last ten years of his rule aren't covered. I suppose "the music god" can tell us just what role Americans played in each of those events. Some of them, sure, there was American involvement, but they were hardly the only ones with an interest. Russia, France, etc. come to mind.
But like anyone, monster or otherwise, Saddam Hussein calculated his own best interests at every step and acted accordingly. He was no puppet on a string.
I think I might make a separate blog entry on this, although I've done it to death already.

Yeah, tail between my legs. Sorry, but I do have a life and can't spend all day arguing on the internet, even with people who are providing the basis for war crimes to continue to occur, as much as I'd like.
That being said I will reserve saying more until I have better citations for what I've said as you have no reason to believe me at the current moment, despite the brain-bending disconnect that remains between our experiences.
