Commons to investigate CBC secrecy

"Conservative MPs will invite Sun News journalists to a Commons committee to explain their dogged pursuit of the way the state broadcaster spends more than $1 billion of taxpayer money.

The government used its majority on the access to information, privacy and ethics committee Tuesday to crush NDP attempts to shut an investigation into the CBC’s refusal to comply with access requests.

The committee hopes to begin hearings next month – around the same time the CBC is in Federal Court appealing a ruling that ordered it to allow Information Commissioner Suzanne Legault to decide what information the CBC should release. Legault has given the CBC a failing grade for thwarting the access process.

The CBC argues it’s special and shouldn’t have to follow federal laws that govern other agencies receiving government funding – an argument Sun News takes a dim view of considering the amount of public money shovelled into the CBC."
