Oh Dear!

Whatever shall WE do?

No more hats for you, Liz.

I wonder if they'd buy it back?

No tears here for the Royals. Their private assets are in the many billions. These people are as wealthy as many of the al-Saud Princes.

For a few examples:

All the incredible collection of artwork in Buckingham Palace, paintings, sculptures, tapestries, etc., is the Queen's private property. Art experts say they couldn't even put a price on all that stuff, that it's easily at least a billion pounds, that if it were all placed on the market, it'd totally distort the global art market for years.

The two Duchies, the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall, are the private property of the Royal Family. Traditionally, the Duchy of Cornwall is owned by the heir-apparent, the Prince of Wales. From Wiki, "...The principal activity of the duchy is the management of its land and properties. The duchy has a financial investment portfolio and owns land totalling 540.9 km² (or 133,700 acres). Nearly half of the holdings are in Devon, with other large holdings in Cornwall, Herefordshire, Somerset and Wales.[1][2] For the fiscal year 2007, the duchy was valued at £647 million, and annual profit in 2007 was £16.3 million, thus yielding 2.5%..." It should be noted that the Royal Family is exempt from income tax. Prince Charles voluntarily pays 25% (a PR move) of his Duchy net income to the British taxman, what he deems, unaudited by the govt, to be his "net". (Whereas, the basic income tax rate for the Queen's mere peasant subjects STARTS at about 50%)

And the Queen has substantial real estate holdings in the US. She owns a huge cattle ranch in Colorado, or Montana?, plus a large thoroughbred-breeding horse ranch in the blue grass country of Kentucky.

This is just mentioning a few of their holdings...Yeah, the Crown Jewels are state property...but the Queen could buy those out of Royal Family petty cash. So, we don't have to worry about the Royals having to tighten the Royal belts.

"It's good to be the king!" ;-)

I didn't know that!! That's almost sacrilege.

Now you must realize, of course, they work hard to maintain their station in life. I mean how would you like to travel around in an old gold-gilded carriage waving vapidly at the throngs as you pass by. As for me? No thanks.

The Queen also owns a villa in the south of France. (BTW, the Queen's, um, loyal Quebec subjects might be interested to know she's extremely fluent in French. Speaks it as well as any educated Frenchwoman! French-French, not the hick Quebec or Cajun dialects! ;-)

Every year, with the help of the respective foreign govts, the Queen makes lengthy very private (unpublicized, no press nor press notices, nor public appearances)vacay trips to her villa and to her horse ranch.

Even a hard-working constitutional monarch needs time off from her vapid waving duties. :-)

Well, I knew about the French thing. I wonder if it has anything to do with the acquisition of various French territories during the Age of Empire or is it a throwback to the days of Richard the Lion Heart and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, or William the Conqueror (1066 and all that)? Mind you, he was a Dane or a Viking, wasn't he?
