That "evil intent" argument for a soldier sounds like the most stupid thing I ever heard.

Like in "Prove that the soldier has an evil intent when he emptied the clip into the victim's stomach"... indeed.

"Manning's supporters have raised funds to place posters in the Washington Metro subway system this week portraying him as a whistleblower, patriot and hero."

I'm going to take a wild guess that all of Manning's "supporters" vote Democratic. By the pseudo-logic of their propaganda, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (whom Progressiveville also supported and demonstrated for) were also whistleblowers, patriots and heroes.

In reality, they're trying to muddy the legal waters. In talking about "evil intent", they're conflating motive, which the law doesn't care about. What the law cares about in defining a crime are the two elements of intent and of act.
