Liberals Stare Into The Abyss

...and see different things:

Predictions of Liberal doom are dead wrong

Liberals may be facing extinction

Personally, I'll go with the second assessment. That's why the comments on the lefty, old-media-organ websites are so littered with screeching, hysterical leftarded howling.

Political parties, good or bad, can be surprisingly resilient. In 1964, Democrat Pres. Lyndon John beat Republican Senator Barry Goldwater in a landslide bigger than any pres. election in decades. Plus the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. Plus most governors were Democrats. People, especially the smug leftards in the MSM, were gleefully predicting the death of the Republican Party.

Then, just 4 years later, Republican written-off "has-been" Richard Nixon beat Democrat Sen. Humphrey in another landslide.

So, the Liberal Party of Canada does not yet have the needed-for-finale stake pounded through what passes for it's heart.

My prediction is that the Liberals will have to remake themselves so drastically that Liberalism, as they historically defined it, will no longer be their foundation. They will be something else. When you have five parties that are capable of putting members in seats in parliament, it becomes a bit of a challenge to present a platform that is sufficiently different from the others. At the present there is very little difference (very little light gets through) between the Liberals and the NDP, and frankly, I'd rather have a contest between two parties that really do oppose one another.

The Liberal reign began in the 1930s, and except for a few brief interludes with the Progressive Conservatives, they have thought themselves the "Natural Governing Party" for 70 or so years.

But, day by day, I become more and more confident that the Canadian electorate and society in general has changed.

It's taken a long time to shake off our British ancestry, but I don't think that matters so much now. We're getting more and more closer to you Yanks, which only makes sense, since we live beside each other and there seems to be a fairly free flow of people, goods and ideas back and forth across that border.

On the other hand, the Liberals have always been chameleons, which is one of the things I don't like about them. They have trouble taking a stand and sticking to it.
