One of my phones is an old rotary phone that was left behind in my house that I bought in 1990. It still works. I don't know how old it is but it is for sure +24 years. It was built in Canada, Northern Telecom is stamped on it.

I grew up on a party line where to dial a number there was a crank on the side of the phone that you turned - two long turns and three short turn - and when asked to give you phone number the answer would be 2 long and 3 short. There was a small mega phone looking device attached to the phone that you spoke into, and a similar device resting on a cradle of the side that you lifted up and held against your ear.

The thing about the 2 long and 2 short ring was that anybody on the same party line could hear it when it range and knew when the recipient answered, which made "listening in" really tempting and really easy. Everybody knew everybody else's business. Kept everyone in line. Lots of fun.

If you needed to make an emergency call, you could just interrupt the other two parties and tell them to hang up.

Gawd, I should learn to proofread before I post. Too many mistakes to bother correcting.
